Alta Loma Angels Meeting

Come join us! Next meeting  - TBA.

Teacher Appreciation
A Big THANK YOU to everyone who helped out with the Big Breakfast in April – the teachers loved it!  We also supported the teachers during STAAR testing and now look forward to Teacher Appreciation Week (May 7-11).  Our last big event for this school year will be the Teacher’s Tailgate Party on Thursday, May 24th. We plan to serve BBQ sandwiches, potato salad, all the trimmings and a few yummy desserts.  If you would like to be a part of this fun ministry, please email Justine or Andrea.

Justine, one of the driving forces behind Teacher Appreciation, will be leaving us at the end of May.  She and Andrea have done a wonderful job this year encouraging the teachers with all sorts of things to inspire. We will miss her and wish her the very best.

Family Fiesta!!
Alta Loma had their Family Fiesta on May 3 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.  I’m sure it was a huge success.  Watch for pictures on the bulletin board in the hall next to the nursery at SVUMC.

A huge Thank You to all who helped make this event a success; the cake bakers, face painters, food booth workers, etc. and a special thanks to Diana Kirking for bringing her horse and buggy.  We could not have done it without you.

KIDS EAT FREE 2012
It’s time.  Start thinking about feeding kids this summer!  SV will serve meals from July 2 – August 19. Current Team Leaders are: Tracy McIver,  Mondays; Lu Ann Lupton, Tuesdays; Nancy Knight, Wednesdays & Jan Chitsey, Fridays. We still need a leader for Thursdays. Find a friend to lead with you, or even just adopt a week here and there through the summer.  The possibilities are endless!  Contact Tracy McIver  FMI

Please pray for all those involved as we prepare for this event.  God is great and can do amazing things through us when we are available to Him.  Thank you for your prayers.

Alta Loma Angels Meeting
We may not be allowed to witness in our public schools with our spoken words about the love we have for Jesus Christ, but it most certainly can be SEEN as we serve the people of Alta Loma through this ministry. Come join us! You will be blessed to be a blessing ! Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 5:30 p.m.

Prayer Vigil for STARR Tests

Beth Bailey has 56 names of people who will serve as Prayer Warriors for the STARR tests on March 27th and 28 (4th grade) and April 24, 25 & 26,  from 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.    Please join in and let Beth know you will help.  Please set aside a time to pray for these students’ success on the tests when Beth contacts you. Thank you for praying for ALL kids taking the tests and thank you, Beth, for organizing this prayer vigil!

KIDS EAT FREE 2012
It’s time.  Start thinking about feeding kids this summer!  SV will serve meals from July 2 – August 19. I hope that you will prayerfully consider helping again this summer. If you feel Him nudging you, please, reply as to how you want to help.  I plan to lead the Monday team again. Call Tracy McIver to sign up.

Spring Fling
Alta Loma PTA is having a family carnival and has asked Sierra Vista to help.  We are jumping at this opportunity by providing volunteers and the use of games we use for Harvest Festival.  The date has been set - May 3 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.  Save the date and come help be the Body of Christ in action. This event is designed to develop parent involvement and family fun in a safe environment. It is also a fund raiser. Each classroom will be responsible for running a booth or game and will schedule students and parents to work at the booth in 30 minute shifts.  Two years ago when we helped with this event, they raised over $1,600. Sierra Vista will provide cakes for the Cake Walk, so if you like to bake and make kids smile, this job is for you! Please pray for all those involved as we prepare for this event.  God is great and can do amazing things through us is we are available to Him. Thank you for your prayers.

Teacher Appreciation
We’re gearing up for more Acts of Appreciation with surprises planned during the testing weeks in March and April.  During Teacher Appreciation Week May 7-11 we are thinking of fun ways to celebrate.  We will be sending out a group email to those of you who offered your addresses with upcoming dates and items/services you might want to help with.  If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please contact Andrea or Justine.

Scholarships
ALA has agreed to provide two scholarships for students to attend the Pearl of the Concho writing project this summer at ASU.  The goal for the Young Writers’ Camp is to allow students of all skill levels the opportunity to become more confident in their writing (regardless of skill level) and develop an appreciation of the writing of others.

Box Tops & Empty Ink Cartridges
Keep the cartridges and box tops coming, folks.  We will send in this week over 200 empty ink cartridges to the cash4empties folks for cash which is to be given to the PTA at Alta Loma. Box Tops for Education  has a goal in 2011-12 of $810 and to date the earnings are $412 with more box tops going in next week.

Kids Eat Free  -  2011 - An Amazing Summer

This program fed 1,820 persons between July 5 and August 19 this summer. Thank you to each and every person who helped in this effort to see that no kid went hungry this summer.  For more information contact Tracy McIver.

Kids Eat...FREE!

The families at Kids Eat...FREE! were treated to a special treat on Monday, July 11. 2011.  The newest sensation, APOSTLE, shared God's love through captivating music and inviting lyrics.  They were joined by their "faithful following," and all who were there were blessed.

Won't you share the joy through the slideshow below.

Mentors:  Contact Tracy McIver

What is a mentor?

This is where we need volunteers the most!  A mentor is simply an adult who is willing to encourage a child.  Some children struggle at school because they feel they don’t matter, or they need someone to be their cheerleader.  Some children need a good role model to remind them to make good choices.  Being a mentor is so easy and one of the most rewarding ways to volunteer.

All it takes is about an hour twice a month or whatever you can give.  Here are some suggestions:

  • Eat lunch in the cafeteria with your student or bring them a “kids meal”.

  •  Take your student to the school library and read a book with them.

  • Give the student a small inexpensive gift or just a card at Christmas and Easter.

  •  Send the student a note in the school mail, letting them know you are thinking of them.

The eternal blessing you give to a child, as their mentor will bring you great joy.  We are blessed to be a blessing to others!

What is tutoring?

Give of your time by helping a student learn.  Help with homework or as directed by the student’s teacher.

Bounce House Volunteers:  Contact Tracy McIver

Volunteers are needed to help with this PTA Fundraiser – come to the gym for 1 hour and watch kids jump in the Bounce House during PE/Music.  Their smiles will melt your heart and you will help the PTA raise funds to benefit Alta Loma Elementary!

Prayer Warriors:  Contact Coral Jean Warren

What is a prayer warrior?

You could be a Prayer Warrior!  All that is required is that you lift a teacher and their class to God in prayer.  Of course you can also send them an email or a card.  It’s up to you how much you do.  You could even invite friends to join you in prayer.  The guarantee here is that you will be blessed beyond measure when you connect with God as you intercede for someone else to be a blessing to them.

Teacher Appreciation:  Contact Andrea Wagner or Justine Gaskamp

What is Teacher Appreciation?

We all know how important Teachers are and how hard they work.  Our goal is to show them in small ways how we value them.  We do this by providing luncheons a few times during the year along with snacks in the office occasionally.   We also would like to put small gifts in their mailboxes as a surprise.  What we are able to do is dependant on how many volunteers we have.  This may be right up your alley!

Birthday Cards:

SAM (Senior Adult Ministry) sends birthday cards to Alta Loma teachers.  Thank you SAM!

Clothes Closet:  Contact Sherri Tipton

What is the Clothes Closet?

Sometimes accidents happen at school and a child has a need for a clean item of clothing.  Sometimes there is a need for clothing that is more appropriate for the weather that day.  A Clothes Closet was created to help students when needed.  We also have a collection of coats for students who are in need of one.  Currently the closet is well stocked, but throughout the year we may ask for donations of gently worn children’s clothing.  It helps us when the clothes are donated as an outfit (shirt and pants or shorts) and packaged in a gallon sized zip lock bag with the size marked on the bag.
