YOUTH LED WORSHIP
The Youth of Sierra Vista would like to invite you to join us on Saturday, February 4th at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 5th at 8:30 & 11:00 a.m. as we report “Breaking News” and follow a CSI team on their newest case.

WE hope to see you there!

MONDAY EVENING WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY
Our next study will be Jesus the One and Only by Beth Moore. We will begin on Monday, January 30th in Life Center Room 105 at 7:00 p.m. This study is 11 weeks. If you’re interested, please call Cindy Kountz for more information.

SECRET PRAYER PARTNERS
It is time to begin signing up to be Secret Prayer Partners for our College Crazies Crew. The College Crazies program supports Sierra Vista’s young adults for the first 5 years after they graduate from high school. It includes those who are attending college or grad school, those in specialized training programs, those gainfully employed and those who are in the Military.

The official Secret Prayer time will be from January 30 - March 11, 2012. Secret Prayer partners are asked to pray for their young adult daily and to send cards or notes of encouragement at least every other week.

Please stop by the table in the Narthex and sign up to support one of these wonderful young adults.

PARENTS' NIGHT OUT!
The Youth and Children’s Ministries will be hosting a “Night Out” for parents on Friday, February 10th, from 5pm to 10pm. Kid’s from birth through 5th grade can come for games, crafts and supper, while mom and dad enjoy a few hours to themselves. The cost will be $30.00 per family. The money goes to cover the cost of the dinner and crafts and the remainder will benefit Youth trips. Watch for more information on this FUN event.

PASS IT ON
The Pass It On Ministry is beginning to expand.  In January we were blessed to be able to offer two prayer shawls.  I know the recipients were richly blessed.  It will be exciting to see what God makes available in February.

When Sierra Vista was doing its Military Ministry, one of the soldiers asked for blank address books for his platoon.  They were ordered and sent, but there were a few left over.  These will be available at the Pass It On table in February.  If you know a military person who is serving overseas, stop by on February 12 and pick up one of these address books to include in your next mailing to them.

KEEP ENCOURAGING!

NEW CHURCH PICTORIAL DIRECTORY!!!
Sierra Vista will be taking photos in February for a new pictorial directory. The dates are February 18 from 9:30 am-4:00 pm,  February 21-24 and February 28-March 2, from 2:00-8:30 pm, and March 3 from 9:30 am-4:00 pm. You can book a time for photos either on line at the link above (click in the box with the photographers), at the sign up area in the Narthex on Saturdays and Sunday, or by calling the Church Office at 944-4041.

MANDATORY SKI TRIP MEETINGS
Mandatory Ski Trip Meetings are scheduled for Sunday, March 5th. The meetings will be for participants, parents and sponsors.  Participants must attend with at least one of your parents. You may choose from two times, one will be at 2:30 and one will be at 7:30. If you have been skiing with us for 3 or more years, you may attend the “short” meeting at 2:00. (ONLY if you have been 3 years or more) If you are a sponsor, there will be a sponsors meeting at 3:30 on the 5th as well. I know that life is very busy, and time is precious, but these meetings are important. I want to be sure that we are all be on the same page before we leave.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE
One of the vows of membership that we take when we join the church is “service”. Here is an opportunity to serve the church for less than 30 minutes a month! We need friendly people (female –male, young-older) to serve as greeters each Sunday before the 8:30 and 11:00 services at the main door to the Sanctuary and at the nursery entrance door.  First time visitors, ongoing visitors, and members respond to a warm smile and having the door opened for them. If this interests you, please call Nancy at 949-9369 or the church office.

We are also needing “1st Time Visitor Contact” deliverers. This entails taking a church information packet to families or persons who have visited Sierra Vista for the first time. It would be once every 7 or 8 weeks and involves usually 3-5 homes. The packets are put together and are ready for delivery by late Monday morning so that you have the rest of the week to take them. This is a fun way to meet new people who are interested in our church. Please contact Ann at the church office if you are interested in this ministry.

"PASS IT ON" HOPES TO EXPAND
Thank you again for your wonderful support during 2011 and for allowing God to use the Pass It On Ministry to encourage others through you.

Now that 2012 has arrived, we are hoping to expand the Pass It On Ministry.  If you create items that can be given to others to encourage them, you are welcome to bring one or two items to be "passed along" in the same way the cards have been for the past year.  Some possibilities that come to mind include jewelry, prayer scarves, prayer shawls, prayer blankets, small paintings or drawings...and the list goes on.  (We will not be including food at this time.)  Items you would like to offer to be "passed on" can be brought on the 2nd Sunday or left in the church office with a note that they are for the Pass It On Ministry.  You are welcome to include a note of encouragement or a favorite scripture of encouragement with any item that is offered.  Also, anyone offering items to be "passed on" who would like to sit at the Pass It On table to encourage the encouragers will be more than welcome!

After the 11:00 service on the 2nd Sunday of each month, any items that have not been taken will be packed away until the coming month.  For more information contact Cathye Moon.

WEEDBUSTER’S CORNER
The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map indicates what the lowest winter temperature most likely will be based on historical records in various zones, serving as a guideline for determining if a plant might survive the winter in a given area.  Other factors like micro-climates also influence plant survivability. Interestingly, the state of Texas has the largest number of cold hardiness zones of any of the states!  The Concho Valley is in Zone 7B, which historically has a minimum winter temperature of 10 to 5 degrees F.  In general, using this information is a useful tool in selecting plants for cold tolerance for a particular region of the country.

The summer of 2011 has set some meteorological records that hopefully will not be broken any time soon.  With already 90+ days of temperatures reaching over 100 degrees F., and the worst drought in recent history, we have learned that the plant hardiness zone is only one consideration that should be given when selecting plants specimens for the Concho Valley.  Some of our native and adapted plants that have done well here in the past have suffered from the prolonged high temperatures that we have experienced this summer.  Nandinas (even the old established specimens),  in particular have lost the battle in many of the local landscapes, and many other plants, such as Indian Hawthornes, have suffered leaf scorch, as well as death.   The American Horticultural Society is making progress in forming a new Heat Zone Map according to the number of days per year that temperatures exceed 86 degrees F.  This new zone map ranges from Zone 1 where temperatures never reach 86 ( Alaska) to Zone 12 where temperatures reach 86 degrees over 210 per year (Laredo and the SW tip of Texas).  We are in Zone 9, averaging 120-150 days per year above 86 degrees.  The AHS now is identifying plants that thrive in each of the designated heat zones, similar to the USDA Hardiness Zone Map.  One might wonder, “Why 86 degrees?”  That is the point the growth processes in most plants begins to struggle and decline.   Heat doesn’t kill plants instantly like cold, but weakens them to the point of eventual death over time.

Take a good look around town and see which plant specimens have survived and which have struggled during the summer heat and drought of 2011.  Hopefully, in the near future, we will have more information, based on both cold, as well as heat, extremes that plant selection and survivability will be based.

“But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no roots.”

SOME MUSICAL NOTES TO UNLOCK “THE KEYS” TO YOUR HEART AND SOUL…

When the remodeling of Chapel Hall was completed, the wonderful transformation became a “state of the art” place where many beautiful, worshipful and musical venues have happened. Our music department has a vision and dreams for expanding our choir programs, instrumental programs, bell choirs, ensemble groups, etc.

Our dream is to acquire a larger piano to be used for the Sanctuary, and move the current grand piano to the Chapel Hall.  As pianos generate their own unique sound, the depth of this sound provides the support for our vocal and instrumental groups.  In order for this vision to move forward, we are hoping to generate at least $25,000 through the purchase of individual piano keys.  These could be purchased by a gift of $250.00 a key, or smaller gifts of $50.00 applied toward that key.

I am praying that you will join me and support this musical endeavor as YOU pray that God is leading you to do so. With His blessing and will, we will continue to play for Him.

AS THE CHURCH GROWS, SO GROWS THE PIANO...
I am so thankful that my parents chose Angelo Heights UMC for our church home when I was a young girl. I have such happy memories, such as singing favorite songs in June Stanford’s Sunday school room, playing volleyball in the backyard of the youth ‘house’,  Bible Study at DeAlva Rader’s house,  Butch Baker and Joe Lee reciting “Who’s on First” in the Fellowship Hall,  the ladies’ (WSCS) Mexican supper, and Sunday night Cokesbury hymn request time. When I was in 10th grade, I started playing prelude music on the piano before worship. The choir director then started asking me to accompany his solos on the piano, and when I was a senior I became the church organist. I vividly remember playing the piano in December of 1974 for my 1st Christmas cantata, “Night of Miracles” by John Peterson. The sanctuary piano at the time (and for many years) was an upright Hamilton. That piano can now be found in the choir room. To this day I adore that piano, although it probably has little to do with the action and sound of the piano.

A good piano has always been important, but the role of the piano has grown dramatically over the past 30 years. In the past, the organ alone was used for all service music and hymns, and the piano was mainly used to accompany the choir anthem and special solos. While the organ is still vital to our worship, the organ and piano share much of the musical support. Today we, along with many other Methodist churches, use piano and organ more equally for hymns for several reasons.

1) We find that congregational singing is enhanced with the use of both instruments together.

2) Hymnody in the Methodist Church has expanded globally and stylistically thus requiring more varied instrumentation.

3) Sierra Vista has followed the trend in making our music more relevant in today’s world, by go- ing with primarily a ‘blended’ worship style instead of the strictly ‘traditional’ worship of 30 years ago. Example: We love to bring glory to God singing “Holy, Holy, Holy” with full organ and pi- ano, with sometimes brass, bells, and timpani. However, we are inspired to action when singing “We Are Called” with piano and guitar.

As our church multiplies, our music department continues to grow in participation and musicianship. This has led us to outgrow our instrument. With the size and acoustics of our sanctuary and the range of voices and instruments that we use (sometimes full choir and orchestra or 5 octaves of bells), an optimum piano for that space would be a semi concert grand piano in the range of 7 ˝ feet in length.  This would not be significantly louder, but would get a fuller, more resonant sound with greater depth. A good quality piano of that size would serve this church well over 50 years.

Presently we have a 6'1'’ Young Chang baby grand piano in our sanctuary. It is a lovely piano, and would be a perfect ‘fit’ for our newly renovated Chapel Hall. This room is such a great new home for our Saturday night worship, and we have enjoyed numerous other worship services, and fellowship events such as dinner theaters and piano and harp recitals there. Many of these events would have been greatly enhanced by a more professional piano. Sometimes we opt for the sanctuary primarily because of the piano, as was the case last spring with Linda’s beautiful Lenten Musical Meditations.

Last fall, the worship committee gave approval to begin a new piano fund. Through memorials and our “On Broadway” dinner theater we have a great start. We currently need $25,000 to make our dream a reality. Any contribution that you can make will be greatly appreciated. Together we can make a difference by providing an instrument that  will help us give our musical best to God and inspire generations to come.

Yours in Christ, Jan

SEEKING TREASURE AT SIERRA VISTA
Our last two SAM’s outings have featured two Sierra Vista members that have wonderful vision & talent. I’m on a quest to find other such treasures within our Sierra Vista family for future SAMS outings. I know there are many. Please “rat out” your friends, and help me uncover these wonderful stories, talents, and other amazing finds. Call the church, and if I’m not there leave a voice message. - Gary

HERE IT IS!
IT IS JUST WHAT YOU'VE BEEN
LOOKING FOR!

We can thank our Evangelism Committee for their creativity and contribution.  “I want to reach out, invite people to my church, etc.  But, it’s just hard for me.”  Ever thought that?  There is an answer.

Window displays are now available for every vehicle associated with Sierra Vista.  They display the Christian symbol of the fish with the words, “Follow Me,” within.  Then below the fish symbol is the web address: sierravista.org.  Please pick one up for each of your vehicles, and a couple for other family or friends as well.  Donations are being accepted to help offset costs.  Let’s have Sierra Vista displayed in every parking lot in the whole of San Angelo.

NEW CHURCH DEVELOPMENT AND TRANSFORMATION COMMITMENT
Sierra Vista UMC has made a commitment to the Southwest Conference of the UMC in the New Church Development and Transformation in an effort to support the new churches of our Conference. There are new churches in San Antonio, Kyle, Canyon Lake, Laredo, Gruene and Spring Branch. Under this commitment, we, as members of SVUMC, will have the opportunity, through either a one-time gift or a special 3-year mission pledge, to help these new churches grow to be as successful and prosperous as our church! These new churches are offering services in places such as the local golf course, family homes, and even in local schools. With the help of your monetary donations, the Southwest Texas Conference can help existing congregations become more effective in their performance of their mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Please search your hearts and join us in this commitment.

MAC AND CHEESE PROJECT HELPS FEED NEEDY IN SAN ANGELO

(from the newsletter of the United Methodist Church Southwest Texas Conference...By Rachel L. Toalson, Managing Editor)

Students at Sierra Vista UMC, San Angelo, deliver boxes of macaroni and cheese to local food pantries as part of their Sunday school class’s Mac and Cheese project. This year they plan to collect 2,011 boxes.  It began as a way to help local food pantries.

But for members of the seventh- and eighth-grade Sunday school class at Sierra Vista UMC, San Angelo, the Mac and Cheese project quickly turned into an understanding that a real need existed in their own community.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas in 2008, junior high students at Sierra Vista, led by Rodney Floyd, one of the junior high Sunday school teachers, began a discussion about people in their hometown who didn’t have enough to eat. The class decided it wanted to do something to help those hungry people, Floyd said. So they began collecting boxes of macaroni and cheese for Project Dignidad, a local food pantry, calling the project “Mac and Cheese 100” and challenging others to race to “beat hunger.”

That year, the class was hoping for 100 boxes. In the 30-day collection period, students collected more than 367 boxes of macaroni and cheese.

They have raised or exceeded their goals every year since then.

When the students delivered their donation to Project Dignidad in 2008, Floyd said, only a single box of macaroni and cheese was left on the shelf of the pantry. The director “broke into tears and was most grateful” for the donation, said the Rev. Steven Sweet, pastor of Sierra Vista UMC.

“A middle school Sunday school class began with the hope of helping some local food pantries,” Sweet said. “In the process, they saw that there is an actual need, right here in San Angelo, Texas, and they were touched by the reality right at home. They challenged themselves to do more, for more, and they did.”

Since then, the project has evolved into a collection of more than 1,000 boxes of macaroni and cheese to fill more than one local food pantry’s shelves during the holiday season.

In fact, this year the group’s goal is to collect 2,011 boxes. They have so far collected 1,700.

Last year’s boxes, 1,524 of them, went to four different charities in San Angelo, including Project Dignidad, Wesley Soup Kitchen, Meals for the Elderly and House of Faith. This year the boxes will be given to the same charities, but The Salvation Army will also be a fifth recipient.

Floyd said that in years past, students have purchased peanut butter, jelly and spaghetti with donated money, given by people within the church and the community.

The project has begun to “take root in other churches and nonprofit sectors of the city,” Sweet said.

“This ministry project has also invited many others in the community into support—many others both within and beyond our local congregation. This ministry is multiplying its efforts and its results.”

Sweet said one of the junior high students, Lonnie Griffith, took his 2010 Christmas gifts cards and spent them on his personal contribution to the Mac and Cheese project. His parents were “unaware of his participation and were inspired by their son’s faith and faithfulness.”

“Lonnie’s contribution is emblematic of the class’s commitment to this ministry project,” he said. “The youth of Sierra Vista really do understand they have been blessed to be a blessing.

Junior high students at Sierra Vista UMC, San Angelo deliver boxes of macaroni and cheese to local food pantries.  “Our youth have learned that their lives are a real and significant part of the overall ministry of Sierra Vista UMC. They have learned that their efforts have helped others in need, have challenged the whole congregation to be generous and that they have been an inspiration in our community to create a larger giving effort. Through this effort, many of our youth have become invitational to other youth, bringing them into the life and ministry of their church.”

Floyd said another student presented the campaign to a homeroom class and collected more than 25 boxes. And one anonymous donor gave $300 to the project last year in memory of their granddaughter, who passed away at 16. Her favorite meal was macaroni and cheese. This year, they donated $500 to the project, he added.

Between 15 and 30 youths participate every year.

Floyd says that if other youth leaders want to teach their youth about caring for the needy, they need only look around them.
“You don’t have to look very far to find someone who is hungry or in need,” Floyd said. “Sometimes the biggest blessing that comes from this project is for the people who donate.”

Sweet said his whole congregation takes “great pride in the faith formation of its youth and rises to the challenge to be more compassionate and generous themselves because of the effort” of the youth’s Mac and Cheese Ministry.

A junior high Sunday school class, he added, “has created a stir” in a city of 100,000.

“When caring and sharing can trump crime and drama? That is an amazing story, in our culture at large,” Sweet said. “I have loved watching this ministry grow, watching our kids’ lives of faith and generosity expand and our church’s support and nurture of the next generation of leadership.”

 .FINAL REPORT

As of December 22, the total number of boxes was 2,666.  The youth delivered approximately 530 boxes of Mac & Cheese to 5 different organizations:  Wesley Soup Kitchen, Project Dignidad, Salvation Army, Meals for the Elderly and House of Faith.  There was a small amount of concern over the three sixes in that 2,666 number… But I say, look at what God did through the Junior High Youth, their dedicated leaders (Rodney Floyd, Butch Baker and Joe Lee), and YOU! I don’t think those three sixes mean anything other than DEFEAT to hunger and that Satan dude!  Because on December 22, 2011… WE BLESSED THE SOCKS OFF THIS TOWN! Thanks 143 million times for your help and support.

Hugs and blessing from your Sierra Vista Youth and Tina!

WRAP UP!

VBS shook things up at Sierra Vista this year!  Our church campus was overflowing with excitement, fellowship, and Bible stories, and Sierra Vista ministered to more kids than ever before.

Here are the final stats for VBS, 2011:

                  225 participating children

65 youth volunteers

72 adult volunteers

$850.96 raised by the kids for Sonrisas Therapeutic Riding

Nowhere was God more apparent during VBS than in the hands, actions, and hearts of the 129 volunteers. They offered their energy, sacrificed time from their own busy schedules, and gave these children experiences that will have life-long impact. What a remarkable witness each of them is!

Thank you to McMillan Painting and Jason McMillan for donating the paper to protect the Sanctuary’s floor during VBS!

Thank you, also, to the entire congregation of Sierra Vista for supporting this important and vital ministry to the children of this community!

2011 PUMPKIN PATCH WRAP-UP

Shea and I want to express how thankful we are that Sierra Vista is so supportive of its Youth Ministry! This year the Pumpkin Patch had another successful year. This year the success was RECORD BREAKING! We made more money and sold a LOT of pumpkins! We had great weather and some great volunteers to help us. Our sales topped $27,000, which was about $4,500 more than last year. We read to over 2,000 children and were blessed with so many smiles! I can’t even begin to thank you enough for supporting this ministry.  The Pumpkin Patch is truly a “gift” that keeps on giving.  Your support for our patch not only helps the Navaho Indian Reservation that grows them, it helps our youth be able to go on trips that they would normally not be able to afford. It also is a very sweet reminder of how precious our children and youth are to the growth of our Church, Our World, and most importantly the Body of Christ! Thank you Sierra Vista and all the Angels that worked in the patch and Ann for helping co-ordinate it! I love you all and am looking forward to more orange next year!

OVER 2,000 PEOPLE CAN NOW “IMAGINE NO MALARIA”!
During the time period that Sierra Vista was learning of the tragedy of the disease of malaria in Sierra Leone; Zaina Renner, from Sierra Leone, wrote in the Upper Room: “Jesus, the innocent one, cruelly nailed onto the cross. It was as if, in excruciating pain, Jesus looked into my eyes, asking, “If I did this much for you, what will you do in return?”

Sierra Vista must have had the same feeling about the people in Africa because we saved over 2,000 lives with gifts and pledges. This shows that once again you gave from the heart when you were aware of the situation.

I hesitate to thank individuals for this success for fear of leaving anyone out. However the people responsible for the luncheon: Michelle Schweitzer was the chef; Youth parents baked the desserts, SVUMC children wove the place mats; the Youth had a sleep-in, set up for the luncheon, served and entertained AND the congregation supported this event.

Many thanks for your generous contribution and continued prayers for those suffering with malaria. You can be proud of the effort one and all put forth in this world mission.

ALTA LOMA BAKE SALE
The Alta Loma Bake Sale was a great success! Coral Jean Warren did a wonderful job getting it organized, putting up fliers and getting workers for the sale. We made $1,250 and the Alta Loma Committee would like to thank each and every participant who helped make this sale a success. Check out the photos on the Alta Loma bulletin board.

EASTER BASKETS OF BLESSINGS
A huge thank you to ALL who donated their time and talent in the Easter Baskets of Blessings and to all who donated hams & bunnies. What started as 20 baskets we hoped to have turned into 52 baskets! Awesome! I only wish you all could have seen the delighted faces of the recipients at Project Dignidad. So many in need were blessed. Thank you, Donna, for rushing all the paperwork through; thank you Dale, for the shirt off your back, and thank you, Sierra Vista, for your generous hearts.

Grace & Peace, Liz Mohler

PHOTO ALBUM ADDED TO WEBSITE

A Photo Album page has been added to the Sierra Vista website. <http://www.sierravista.org/photoalbum.htm>
It can be reached by clicking on the bottom button of the stained glass window menu found on the left side of most of the website pages or by clicking on the camera below.

The Photo Album page contains links to pictures from many of the church activities during 2009 & 2010.   More pictures will be added as they become available.  Be aware that even though the pictures have been compressed and reduced in size, the pages are still very "graphics intense" and may freeze older computers.

Although Claire Reynolds was a bit older than most of the College Crazies Crew, she has been an "honorary" part of the group  for the past couple of years. Her death was a tragic loss.  Memorial pages have been added to the College website at <http://www.sierravista.org/college/clairemem.htm>
